We hope you’re enjoying the summer—and hope you don’t mind this update!
First, a huge thank you to everyone who cared, commented, shared, and supported us after my post nearly 4 weeks ago about The Language Hub having to leave its premises and our library losing its home. It has meant so much—especially the good wishes from people and organisations we’ve never even been in touch with before. Difficult times can feel lonely. Life seems to go on as if nothing happened, as if people can’t see what’s going on, or simply don’t care. So it’s been heartwarming and reassuring that a community did stop, did listen, and has had our back since our announcement.
As you can imagine, the last few weeks have been extremely stressful—moments of despair, thoughts of running away, tears of anger. Our biggest worry was our precious library. It’s a community asset reflecting our work and the togetherness and equality we’ve been building for so long. The thought of it stopping or disappearing was awful. But wow, have we been lucky. We’ll be eternally grateful to #glasgowlife for storing all our books for 3 months, with a review option for 3 more.
We’re so happy #collectivecommunities is storing our bespoke bookshelves, and very pleased #schoolofeducation at Glasgow University is giving some of our resources a home for now.
We’re also very thankful to #gsen for their support, connections, and arranging additional talks with our local Police Scotland office.
Thank you to #patrickharvie, #irisduane, #anthonycarroll and #bobdoris for checking in personally. A big shout-out to #scilt, who would have offered storage without hesitation but sadly didn’t have enough space. To everyone who sent good wishes from near and far, shared our situation and their own experiences, and made constructive suggestions—THANK YOU! We hope to meet you one day, in person, online, or in Glasgow. Your comments helped us through these last few weeks.
Where are we now? Online sessions continue from 10th August, and face-to-face sessions have moved to more public spaces. And our library? We’re seeking funding to bring it back into a public space—it needs to be accessible and used. The aim: secure enough funding, find suitable premises, and continue as a library offering language services rather than a language centre operating a library. As the only publicly accessible multilingual lending library, it’s unique, special, and needs to progress. We want to secure its long-term future—and I’m sure we will!
