So, we did it! We opened our coffee shop – The Café Hub – on Small Business Saturday 1st December 2018. Having picked up the keys only 2 days earlier we had our work cut out for us. Luckily, we could count on a fantastic team who worked extra hours and of course friends and family looking after our children, while we would clean, move furniture, write menus, and practise our coffee making skills.
On Saturday morning 10am, we opened up. On display were our wonderful cakes and brownies, fresh croissants, and the air was filled with the smell of fresh coffee. We welcomed our first customers who allowed us to take their picture and started off our new venture of cappuccinos and lattes, soups and toasties.
Some of you might wonder why we did this. Didn’t we have enough work to do running a language school and book shop? Yes indeed, we did. But it has always been our ambition to run a café for our community which offers good quality coffee, simple and tasty food, and provides a venue for events and exhibitions in the heart of Partick. The Café Hub does and is all that. The spacious coffee shop allows busy mums, students, professionals and ‘Lebenskünstler’ to take some time out to treat themselves. As it is so close to our language school, it’s an opportunity to have a bite to eat before or after class.
So far we have been very happy with the progress in our Café Hub. Our customers love our coffee, our staff grows more confident, and we are beginning to implement our vision of the community hub we are creating. On 14th December from 6pm to 9pm, we are welcoming our first art exhibition organised by Polish-Glaswegian Artist, Marta Adamowicz who will exhibit some of her favourite pieces on the Scottish art scene. Marta will be a regular at the Café Hub, organising exhibitions, work-shops and art projects. To find out more, visit M Gallery Glasgow on Facebook. Our mezzanine level, where this will take place can be hired for other events, classes and projects. For enquiries please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or give us a call on 0141 258 2700.
What will be happening with the ‘old’ Hub?, you might wonder. We will be keeping The Language Hub at 19 Keith Street as a learning space and book shop, so all our wonderful language classes will continue to be held there and you can still enjoy a cup of coffee after your Bounce & Rhyme or while browsing our multi-lingual book store. We are still pursuing our goal of opening a lending library with modern languages books for the public and schools. In the meantime, we are closing our first unit at 52 Keith Court and hope it will be a welcoming and warm space for someone else to use. It has served us well and we will miss it. For now, we want to look to the future and look forward to spending it with old and new friends of the Hub.
